Severe Thunderstorm Warnings are being issued across parts of West Michigan and Southwest Michigan Tuesday night as a series of supercell storms are creating some dangerous conditions. Heavy rainfall and huge hail - some measuring nearly 3 inches across - are being reported across West Michigan.
How does hail form? First, we need a thunderstorm to develop. As it strengthens, the updraft or vertical wind becomes faster. Water droplets are swept up by the updraft high into the storm, above the freezing level and freezing into a ball of ice.
This was one of the weirdest weather events I've seen in almost 30 years in meteorology, not so much for the event itself, but where it happened.
The destructive hail was up to four inches in size.
